Mothers for Life: “Please come home”

A group of Western mothers, whose children have joined ISIS and other extremist groups in Syria and Iraq recently appealed for them to come home and re-join their families via an open letter on social media.

Mothers for Life, a global network with members in seven countries, aims to bring bereaved mothers together, to share their experiences and prevent other families suffering the devastation that they have suffered.

Over the past four years, young Western men and women have joined extremist networks after being recruited by violent jihadists, often operating online. Every parent needs to be aware of the risks posed by the internet and social media.

Here at FAST, that is something we know all too well. We know of the heartbreak that affects every family whose child goes and joins extremist groups.

From talking to parents and families here in the UK we know how important it is to provide support to those who have experienced violent jihadist radicalisation first hand.

If you believe your child is at risk, the first thing to do is to talk to them. So be calm, don’t get angry and they’re far more likely to open up to you. Encourage them to share their ideas and opinions.

Many young people who act on their support for ISIS by travelling are often not aware of the realities and consequences of what they are about to do, or the arguments against it. This is what they need to know.
