Brussels Tragedy Ahead of the Easter Break

At least 31 people are known to have been killed in the recent Brussels attacks. The tragic news has been a painful reminder as to how close to home such atrocities can be – and how young people can be drawn into murdering dozens of innocent people. Whether these criminal acts take place in Europe or the Middle East, we are now aware of the level of influence our children can fall under.

With the coming of Easter, we have been afforded more precious time to spend with our parents, our sisters, our brothers and our children. Often the Easter holidays can be an intense study period for those about to sit their GCSEs and A-levels, but it can also be a period where young people spend time searching for preoccupation and meaning in their paths.

Last Easter, some teachers outlined their general concerns about pupils who they believed may be considering travelling to Syria, using the holiday as an opportunity to engage with Daesh propaganda and potentially be duped into leaving.

While this year much less has been said to remind families of the increased risk of radicalisation over the school break, the reality still stands that young people may be more exposed to dangerous content and we must stay close to our loved ones and remain vigilant.

If you’re concerned that a family member or friend is under the influence of Daesh recruiters, please see our ‘where to turn’ page.
