Amira Abase: The girl who travelled to Syria

In February of this year, three teenage schoolgirls left their homes in East London and travelled to Syria to join ISIS. This week VICE News spoke to the family of Amira Abase, one of the three schoolgirls to find out what it’s like for those left behind by the tragic choices of their loved ones.

Her parents speak about her great academic performance, her upcoming interview for college, the start of her journey towards adulthood, their pain at her disappearance and how her online activities led to her becoming increasingly radicalised.

Amira didn’t make the decision to join ISIS alone. Her mother says that someone was pushing her to join the extremist group, that she was scared. It is believed that Sharmeema Begum, another teenager who travelled to Syria was responsible for grooming Amira.

The effect of Amira’s disappearance on her family has been devastating. “There is a sickness that I can’t describe “ said Amira’s father, “you can’t be normal … we are left in the middle of nowhere’.

In the summer holidays children are much more likely to be idle, become secluded and spend more time on the computer.  It is important to be aware of what your children are doing on social media and if they are exhibiting any significant change in their behaviour.
