Assad Uzzaman: The boy who wanted to come home

Recently, it was reported that 25 year old Assad Uzzaman, the last of a group of young men from Portsmouth who left the UK to fight with ISIS in Syria had died. Assad is thought to be the 50th Briton to die whilst fighting with extremist groups in the Middle East.

His death, the details of which remain unknown, is another sad chapter in the battle with ISIS for the hearts and minds of our sons and daughters. The real tragedy is that Uzzaman wished to return home to his family. It has been revealed that he wept when he told his family he wanted to leave Syria but could not do so due to the extremists he was with.

Assad feared that conversations with his family back home in Portsmouth were being monitored by ISIS fighters who would punish him severely if he tried to leave.

“The lesson here is simple: anyone who thinks it a good idea to fight in Syria on any side should consider the very real possibility it will cost them their life.’ – Flick Drummond, Member of Parliament for Portsmouth South

For many young people travelling to join the extremist group, once they realise their mistake it will be too late to change their minds. This is why prevention is so important.

Understandably, the Uzzaman family are heartbroken at the loss of Assad.  He was a much-loved son and his disappearance was completely unexpected. They never had a chance to say goodbye.

ISIS recruiters specifically instruct young people considering travel to Syria to act normally and avoid attracting suspicion. If you are concerned about a loved one, friend or family member then please read the ‘What to do’ page on our website.
